The Worst Golf Club

Bejeezus-Belt Championship

Roy McAvoy Classic recap:
Tom & Mike would be teammates in the BBC but ALSO be enemies, matched up against one another in the Quarterfinals. Mike would take an early lead, Tom would make it a little close but fell apart, bascially out of it before starting the back 9. Mike advances 62 to 80. Joe and Donnie had an excellent matchup which came down to the last couple holes. Donnie would end up advancing with a score of 64-67. Frank P & Pat would both post top 10 scores but Pat's 55 (an event low) was just too much for Frank's 65 to overcome. Pat advances. Matt P and Matt B would continue their rivalry but Matt B would make quick work of Vosti's vibes. MB's natual 80 would give him a 56 which was way too strong for MP's 72. Matt B advances. The seme-finals will be played out in July's DWI and will feature Mike vs Donnie and Pat vs Matt B.
Bunker Hill Golf Course played host to our 4th regular season event. The Worst Golf Club has watched the members complete 3 solo tournaments leading to the Bejeezus-Belt Championship, the 1st team event of the year. Teams were decided based on the current standings leading up to the June 23rd spectacle. The 1st place golfer was paired with the last place golfer; 2nd place with 2nd to last; 3rd place with 3rd to last, etc, etc. With 6 members unavailable to compete, this left us with 10 teams in the field.

Matt B & Byrnes
United by Booze, Matt and Byrnes' 18 year friendship struck fire and took home the 1st place prize, the Carl Spackler Cup. Matt's 56 combined with Byrnes' 61 to give them a winning total of 117.

Tommy's Honour

The 3rd regular season event had it all: make up dates, rain, AWOLs, suspensions and a dramatic finish that was one for the ages!
Tommy's Honour, played at Silver Lake Golf Course on Staten Island, technically kicked off with Frank Q and Matt P as both members were unable to make the round on May 5th. Matt surely wishes his score was eligible to win. Golfers who are unable to attend on event day cannot win but can still finish anywhere from 2nd to last place. Matt put up an overall low sore of 58! His opponent in the Roy McAvoy Classic, Dean, would have too much to overcome a week later and would watch his good friend Matt move on to the Elite 8. Frank Q would put up a very respectable score of 72, which was good for 16th place, but would succumb to his opponent, Donnie, to be mentioned later on.
May 5th began with our first group, which consisted of Frank E, Norm, and Steve. We were supposed to have a sudden death hole off between Mike Boots and Norm, where the winner would face Frank E that day as part of the Sweet 16 in the RMC. Mike, however, was a last minute cancellation with a makeup date to be played a week later. Norm could have used the in person boost to his competitiveness as he mustered up a lousy 82 which gave him a tie for 22nd. Frank E was rolling and finished with the lowest natural score (88), giving him a 68 with the handicap, good for a 3-way tie for 9th place. Spoiler alert: he would eventually be eliminated by Mike who caught fire around hole 7 to put Frank in the rear view mirror and move himself on to the Elite 8 of the Roy McAvoy. Mike finished his makeup day with a resounding 62 which gave him a tie for 3rd place with his better looking cousin, Tom. Steve, in typical fashion, wasn't good, wasn't bad, and his 70 put him in 14th place snagging him his first ever W.M.D. award!
The 2nd group went out as another threesome: Matt B, Andrew and Frank P. Pete was this groups' AWOL, something along the lines of a "newborn" was his excuse. Matt B. and Andrew were matched up in the RMC and boy did we have drama! Cursing, club smashing, and trash talk saw this battle come to an end by the closest of margins, 1 stroke! The winner would be Matt B. who shot a 74 (T-17th), escaping Andrew's 75 (T-19th). Pete would be able to make up his round the next week as well, and his match-up against Frank P would also come down to the wire. Pete was chasing Frank's beautiful score of 66 (7th place). Stumbling down the stretch, however, Pete would finish with a respectable 68, losing by 2, but picking up some points in the standings with a finish of a tie for 9th place.
Group 3 had Ryan, Dean, Joe, and newcomer Jon G. Jon retroactively played a round at La Tourette to get a handicap and was awarded last place for the first 2 events for the sake of points and standings. The newest member played with the lowest handicap of the WGC at +20 and had a great day considering that fact, finishing with a 75 , leacing him in that tie for 19th. Dean, as mentioned earlier, was chasing Matt P.'s blistering score of 58 and was unable to do so. He finished in 21st with a score of 77. Ryan and Joe would duke it out in their match-up, going toe-to-toe the majority of the day. Originally handing in a scorecard of 66, Ryan would go on to think he won this excellent Sweet 16 match. However, after review from the committee and Prez Dez, Ryan actually had a score of 69 (T-12th) which would give Joe the much deserved victory after posting a 67 (8th place). Ryan would go on to be handed a suspension of 40 days and 40 nights, deeming him ineligible to compete in the next event, the Bejeezus-Belt Championship. He will return just in time to play the D.W.I. on July 14th.
The Tin Cup Cup winner, Donnie, would go out with Byrnes, J Bob and Pat in Group 4. Donnie would be pursuing the score of 72 left by Frank Q and was able to with some ease, staying hot with a score of 64, 3 strokes shy of the Tommy's Honour winner. Byrnes seemed to be more interested with his intake of booze and still took away 15th place with a score of 71. J Bob and Pat played along in their match-up and J Bob was the unlucky one here. After finishing with a 69 (T-12th), he had a front row seat to Pat and his 61 which would announce him Tommy's Honour winner, but he wouldn't know it until the last group finished.
Group 5 combined Tom, Anthony M, Tim, and Chris M. Chris continued his strong play finishing in 6th place with a nice 65. Tim, on the other hand, couldn't find his touch and ended up with an 86 (24th place). Anthony M and Tom had a nice back and forth in their match-up but Tom's hot start was too much to come back from for Anthony, who finished in a tie for 17th with a 74. Tom naturally parred holes 2-4 and that set the tone for the rest of the day. Battling the elements, he was red hot through the first 16 holes. However, the yips on 17 watched him score a 6, and the hecklers on 18 watched him score a 7, losing him the event by 1 stroke, despite the great score of 62, ultimately putting him in that tie for 3rd place.
Alex and Anthony P would be the last to make up their rounds. Alex had a nice day with a 68 (t-9th) and Anthony P struggled to an 82 (T-22nd).
Brandon and Chris L were unable to participate, therefor automatically finishing them in 25th and 26th, respectively.
Congrats to Pat on an incredible day, taking home the title of first ever Tommy's Honour's winner!
The Roy McAvoy Classic Elite 8, to be played out at the next event, will now see Cousin Mike vs Cousin Tom, Joe vs Donnie, Frank P vs Pat, and Matt P vs Matt B, a rivlary that blossomed at the pre-season's Bogey Bonus event.

Tin Cup Cup
The Worst Golf Club saw its 2nd event, and 1st with our handicaps, play out in excellent fashion on April 14th in the Boogie Down, aka The Bronx, NY. Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course were excellent hosts and it was an honor to play on the countries' oldest public course, where the likes of Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and even the Three Stooges hit these exact links. Frank E and Joe actually got their round in the day before the majority, teeing off on Saturday the 13th. Frank, the CPO co-leader, struggled out of the gate and couldn't get back to form, finishing with a 77. Joe, on the otherhand, started strong and never looked back, giving a score of 62 which shockingly ended up tieing for 3rd place! On Sunday, we saw the 1st Group consist of Tim, Dean, Byrnes, and Donnie. Tim started his day with a max out of Quad Bogey and followed that hole up with everyone's favorite Albatross and THAT represented more of the kinda of day he had. Tim finished last place in the CPO resulting in disqualification from the Roy McAvoy Classic and looked every bit of righting that wrong. Tim finishes with a brilliant 63 in 5th place. Dean, with a BYE in the RMC, finishes in a tie for 6th with a 65. Byrnes had a strong day, shooting a 71, aligning himself in a tie for 11th place, but ended up eliminated in the RMC by Andrew. Group 2 was Anthony M, Matt B, J Bob, and Chris L. Chris couldn't get things going and with the possibility of his wife giving birth at any moment, his mind just wasn't on the course. Chris finished 19th with an 85. J Bob followed up his 3rd place finish at the CPO with an underwhelming 79, which coincidentally tied his group member Matt B for 17th place. The CPO winner found frustration early and couldn't kick it. Those 2 had BYES in the RMC. Lastly, Anthony M finished admirably, shooting a 75 (15th place). He advances in the RMC and now faces Tom in the 2nd round. Group 3 had Andrew, Alex, Frank Q and a guest named Lou. Frank picked up where he left off and shot a really nice 65, tied for 6th in the TCC. Alex seemed to have a lot of nerves flowing after receiving his Pimento Cheese sandwich and toppled down the hill with a 103 (21st), knocking him out in the RMC. Andrew is quoted as saying he played the best round of his career, finishing at -10 with a 60. Group 4 was the last group on Sunday consisting of Frank P, Chris M, Tom Ryan and guest Chris Ryan, no relation. Frank had a typical solid day, ending up in 10th place at -2 (68). Chris had the round of his life claiming "I LOVE HANDICAPS!" over and over again. He finishes with a 62 (-8), good for a tie for 3rd. The unforunate result of his day is being matched up against Donnie who also had a career day and Chris was eliminated in the RMC. Tom had 2 halves, a typical jekyl and hyde kind of day, He was +7 after the front 9, but on the back 9 he shot a -5, ending his day with a +2 (72), giving him a little hope for his matchup in the RMC next round (he received a BYE). A week after the Tin Cup Cup, on Sunday, 4/21, Matt P, Brandon and Pete were able to make up their missed rounds. Pete had a great day, putting together a strong 67, placing him in a tie for 8th. He ultimately would win his matchup in the RMC but wouldn't find out until 24 hours later. Brandon, on the other hand, struggled, blaming traffic, trials and tribulations. He would suffer the opposite fate as Pete, 24 hours later realizing he'd be eliminated from his RMC matchup. Matt P, chill as ever, coasted with his 1st round BYE, snagging a mediocre 73 for 14th place. Lastly, Steve and Pat got together on Monday, the 22nd and attempted to win their matchups. Steve was unlucky in his after putting together a great day. He scored a 71, tied for 11th, but lost to Pete by 4 strokes. Pat was able to string together a great day and crushed Brandon in his matchup, penciling him in to the Sweet 16 with a 67. The Tin Cup Cup came down to a clash of titans. Donnie and Andrew went swing for swing and what a roller coaster it was. Andrew jumped out to a big lead right away. After the 4th hole, Andrew was sitting -5 and Donnie was at -1. Andrew gained one more stroke on hole 5 but Donnie was able to gain 3 strokes back after a clutch and rare albatross! Andrew was unraveled, following that hole up with an eagle, now up 4. After 8, Andrew gained 1 more stroke and ended up with a 6 stroke lead after 10, seemingly putting Donnie in the rearview. The Rockaways legend refused to go away, gaining 1 stroke back on 11, 2 strokes back on 12, and 1 stroke back on 13, leaving him only 1 behind. After a birdie on 14, Donnie tied it up. A birdie on 15 now gave him the lead and we watched the 2 golfers both par hole 16. A bogey on 17 for Andrew now left him 2 strokes behind and that is where we would settle after 18. Donnie would end up the first ever winner of the Tin Cup Cup with a monstrous 58 (-12). A couple clicks are certainly due for Andrew who finished with a 60 (-10).

1st ever Tin Cup Cup winner and recipient of the Doug Sanders "Peaccock of the Sand Trap" jacket

1st ever Tin Cup Cup winner and recipient of the Doug Sanders "Peaccock of the Sand Trap" jacket
Chubbs Peterson Open
The Chubbs Peterson Open was a brilliant showcase of what being a member of The Worst Golf Club is all about. Featured at La Tourette Golf Course in Staten Island, NY, The CPO gave us birdies and pars (boooooo!!!!) but also gave us PLENTY of bogeys and beyond (yayyyy!!!). Matt P and Brandon were unable to attend on the event date but got a round in 5 days prior. With extreme winds, the 2 golfers battled and finished with respectable scores, well, for us! Matt ended his day with a 106 which was good for a 10th place finish and Brandon shot a 109 giving him a share for 14th. This led to our full day on Sunday, March 17th for the first ever regular season event.
The first group saw J Bob, Ryan, and Pete attempt to put their stamp on the Club, but to nobodies surprise, that failed. Pete labored for a 118 (20th), Ryan was so-so with a 108 (T-12th), and J Bob finished with a respectable 99 (3rd), but was never really close after shooting a 54 on the front.
Group 2 consisted of Norm (113, T-16th), Chris M (115, T-19th), Steve (107, 11th), and Pat 115, T-19th). The 1st hole set the tone for their day with scores of 8,8,7, and 10. Each golfer DID improve as the day went on, having lower scores on the back 9 than their front so hopefully they keep the trend up!
Group 3 included Matt B(mentioned later), Byrnes (109, T-14th), Tom (104, T-7th), and Mike Boots (113, T-16th). With Matt having a great day, the other 3 decided to drink their faces off, easing their pain just a little. Tom played mostly double bogey golf, Byrnes was on point with his driver all day (but with nothing else), and Mike Boots will delete his front 9 out of his memory , forever.
Group 4 was a couple of Franks (Q-100, T-4th, and P-101, 6th), Donnie (108, T-12th), and Chris L (117, T-21st). Chris returned after a few years hiatus and it certainly showed. Donnie held his own and finished with the first ever WMD, the Worst Mediocre DBag, given out to the golfer who finished directly in the middle of the pack, neither being good nor bad. Frank P was consistent as always and after a somewhat slow start, Frank Q came on strong in the back 9 with 3 pars, good for a 46.
Group 5 - Frank E(mentioned later), Joe (100, T-4th), Dean (104, T-7th) and Andrew (113, T-16th). Joe put himself in the running early with a solid 46 front 9 but an triple bogey on hole 10 was the beginning of his end with a sub-par back 9 (54).It took Dean 5 holes to warm up after arriving just before tee time, but things are looking up. Andrew had a better second half than his first half but fell too far behind with 4 snowmen in a 6 hole stretch.
The last group was something else , that's for sure. Anthony M had a nice day with a 105 (9th). However, the other members all finished in the bottom 3. Anthony P (119, 23rd), Alex (125, 24th), and Tim (132, 25th) have some work to do, but going in to the Tin Cup Cup, maybe their handicaps will play to their benefits!
The finale came down to Matt B and Frank E. After hole 4, Frank held a 3 stroke lead. Matt chipped away over the next 2 holes, coming within 1 of the lead. After gaining a stroke back on hole 6, Frank blew up on hole 9 with a triple bogey, and Matt's par was good enough to give him a 1 stroke lead after 9, 44-45.
On holes 10-12, Frank was cruising and took back his lead, including a birdie on 12. Up a monstrous 4 strokes with 6 holes to go, Frank thought he had Matt in the rearview mirror. Resiliently, Matt took 1 stroke back on 13, 2 strokes back on 14, and 1 more stroke back on 15, giving us a tie with 3 holes to go! Matt followed with bogey and double bogey while Frank stormed back with a par and bogey to go up 2 with only 1 hole remaining. Frank, however, did exactly what he did on the front 9. He finished with a triple bogey and Matt snagged a bogey to even it up for a tie for 1st place. A playoff hole was not possible so the 2 golfers decided to bring their talents to the Tin Cup Cup, with the lower score of the 2 being the recipient of the John Fudge Hand Wedge trophy and 1st ever Chubbs Peterson Open winner.
